As we head into 2026, many boat owners in Horseshoe Bay and the Highland Lakes are waiting for the first 80-degree weekend to check their engines.

To help you beat the rush and guarantee a trouble-free Spring Break, the service team at Bay Marine & Sports Center has compiled the ultimate guide to pre-season boat preparation.


Do I need to haul my boat out for service on Lake LBJ?

No. On Lake LBJ, many general maintenance tasks can be performed right at your dock.

Hauling a large tritoon or cruiser out of the water is a logistical challenge, especially if you don't own a trailer. At Bay Marine & Sports Center, we solve this with our On-the-Water Service fleet.

What we can do at your dock:

What is the most common cause of boat failure in Spring?

The number one cause of "failure to launch" in spring is a dead battery or a dry-rotted impeller.

  • Batteries: Even disconnected batteries self-discharge over winter. If a battery sits below 12.4 volts for months, it sulfates and dies. We perform a "Load Test" to ensure your battery can handle the cranking amps of a modern marine engine.

  • Impellers: The rubber water pump impeller can take a "set" (get bent out of shape) if it sits in one position for months, leading to immediate overheating on your first trip out.

Can I upgrade my boat's audio system during the winter?

Yes, winter is the best time for major upgrades like marine audio, upholstery, or flooring.

"Wish list" items—like installing Wet Sounds tower speakers, or underwater LEDs—are labor-intensive. They often require removing interior panels and complex wiring.
