Lake LBJ is Open and Ready for Your Return!
After the Floods, A Silver Lining: Lake LBJ is Open and Ready for Your Return!
The past month has been a trying time for our Central Texas community. The historic floods that swept through the Highland Lakes and the Guadalupe River over the Fourth of July weekend brought devastation that was felt by so many of our friends, neighbors, and families. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been negatively impacted by this tragedy, and we stand in solidarity with the incredible recovery efforts that have shown the true strength and resilience of our community.
In the weeks since, we've watched with hope as the waters receded and dedicated crews worked tirelessly to manage the situation. Now, we have some positive news to share. Thanks to the diligent work of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), most of the Highland Lakes, including our beloved Lake LBJ, have reopened for boating and recreation.
A New Fullness and A Call for Caution
While the flooding was a destructive force, it has brought a silver lining for lake enthusiasts. For the first time in years, the deluge has completely replenished our water supply reservoirs. Lake Buchanan rose over 17 feet and is now considered full, and Lake Travis has risen an incredible 38 feet, bringing their combined storage to over 95% of capacity. This means deep, beautiful waters perfect for boating, skiing, and fishing.
As we return to the water, safety remains the top priority. The LCRA advises boaters to remain cautious, as some flood debris may still be present both on and below the surface. It's best to limit boating to daytime hours when visibility is clear. While water quality has largely returned to normal pre-flood levels, it's always wise to avoid stagnant or murky areas.
Summer Isn't Over Yet!
With back-to-school season on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to squeeze in those last few memory-making summer days on the water. And the weather is certainly on our side! The forecast for late August and early September promises plenty of sunshine and hot Texas temperatures, with daily highs expected to be well into the 90s and even hitting 100 degrees. There is still so much summer to enjoy, and our full lakes are calling.
